The goal of P25 Interoperability. L
for digital radio communications, which meet the specifi c needs of federal, state/ province and local public safety agencies, including interoperability and seamless communication.
aw enforcement and
other fi rst responder agencies country- wide are switching from conventional analog radio systems to P25 direct- digital replacement technology. If your organization is making this transition soon, it doesn’t have to be painful. One of the major requests from users is to make the radio interface as similar as possible to their existing one—and that is very achievable.
One of the advantages of P25 is it’s a di- rect replacement for many of the features people are already using on analog. It does everything your existing system does but with additional features, so you can mi- grate to P25 without major retraining. The goal is to be able to just pick a device up and access everything in a similar way to how you have before.
P25 (or ‘Project 25’) technology is a collab- orative initiative between the Association of Public Safety Communications Offi cials In- ternational (APCO), the National Associa- tion of State Telecommunications Directors (NASTD), selected federal agencies, and the National Communications Systems (NCS). The aim is to implement a suite of standards
One problem with moving to any new technology is that if you use proprietary technology and then have to expand or upgrade, you are locked into one supplier. P25 is an open architecture, with a user- driven suite of system standards. These work together so it has special features and interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers. It means you’re
not locked into the same supplier for the life of the system.
You can choose the best equipment available at that time. Police, sheriffs, fi re or ambulances can buy from different manu- facturers and the equipment is all compat- ible, allowing seamless communication within and between organizations. There is also price competition from the start, en- abling agencies to get the best deal. There are a number of other digital stan- dards on the market, but the beauty of P25 is that it’s available in different confi gura- tions, like Conventional, Trunked and Si-
