“Not only did IPT provide demo units for us to test, but they had all the necessary data and documentation to support their technology. Not to men- tion their warranty period was double what other vendors offered,” Brown stated. “I ran a series of three levels of tests and was astounded by the differ- ence in battery runtime.” In April of 2015, Brown conducted the first test herself while working at the dispatch center during Indio’s big concert month. After using the radio for three days straight without hav- ing to recharge, she knew she was on to something good. The final test was with Indio’s SWAT officers who are typically on extended operations and can’t always get to a charger while in the field or find it burdensome to carry a back-up battery. They reported expe-
riencing a dramatic improvement and were amazed at what a difference hav- ing a steady power source made. Now Brown was completely convinced IPT was the way to go.
The final concern was that replacing OEM batteries with alternative bat- teries might harm the manufacturer’s radios. Brown said, “I received a guar- antee in writing from IPT that if there was any damage to the radios as a re- sult of their batteries, they would re- place them. As it turns out, the written guarantee was unnecessary because we’ve had zero problems since pur- chasing IPT last year.”
Indio PD has approximately 110 staff members, including 69 sworn of- ficers, who have been outfitted with radios powered by IPT. Each battery came with a customized department
label to identify them in case Indio’s radios were loaned to other agencies. “IPT’s Lithium Polymer batteries are at a similar or even slightly lower cost to the manufacturer’s product,” said Brown. “It’s a bonus that their batter- ies are noticeably lighter as well.”
