arrior track sent five athletes to attend the 2016 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Track Meet at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Junior Jennah Richmond, a dual sport athlete who led the Warrior volleyball team in points
this year, was the lone Warrior to represent Jessup at the 2015 National Track Meet this year to compete in the same event, heptathlon. Last year Richmond placed tenth nationally in the heptathlon, consisting of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter sprint, long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. Richmond met the national "B" standard with an event score
of 4,279 achieved at the Chico Classic in February, a score which places her fourth best nationally in the NAIA. In addition to attending nationals for the second year, Richmond received the NAIA Scholar-Athlete award with a 3.99 Cumulative GPA and was William Jessup University’s female athlete recipient of the coveted GSAC Cliff Hamlow Character Award. Jessup’s distance runners have had an excellent year as well with
three runners representing the university in Alabama. Michael Basuini, another NAIA Scholar-Athlete award winner, met the national “A” standard in the half-marathon. Basuini, also a dual sport athlete who
runs cross country in the fall, met the standard early in the season winning the local Jed-Smith Half Marathon held in Sacramento. Basuini was joined in the national half-marathon by female
teammates (both in track and cross country) Hannah Schmidt and Bailey Shykowski. Schmidt beat the national “A” standard of 1:30.00 by over two minutes, finishing Sacramento’s Shamrock’n Half Marathon in 1:27:41 and is currently ranked 13th in the NAIA. Bailey Shykowski, an extremely well-accomplished freshman runner with the Warriors, met the “B” standard in the same event with a time of 1:30:31. Rounding out the Warriors representation at Nationals is junior
Craig Elliott II. Elliott set a school record this year in the 800-meter mid-distance run. The record was set April 8 at the Chico State Distance Carnival and Twilight Meet, completing the grueling event in 1:52.92 placing him 9th nationally in the NAIA. Along with the team’s athletic achievements, the Warrior track
team has eight Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete award winners on the 2016 squad. These individuals are juniors and seniors who have maintained a cumulative GPA of over 3.5.
