improving its return-to-play rules and limiting the number of contact practices, etc. But does this even scratch the surface of addressing the causes of CTE? The conversation has barely begun on the ethics and cost of industry practices that hurt so many of its own players and devalues the worth of human life. Christian Tappe also stated that “while football

players aren’t dying right there on the gridiron, they are dying. They are enduring years of brain damage, dementia, and memory loss at a high rate…. The growing trend of brain-damaged players experiencing serious symptoms and even early death is alarming” No doubt we do need to conduct additional

research in this area, but we know from what has already been completed that the game of football as currently pursued is certifiably causing suffering and even death to its players. The AMA took a strong stance in the mid 1980’s about banning boxing that they renewed in 2002, but no such stance has been take against football. One study stated the number of boys playing high school football between 1972 and 2007 was about 36 million, college football almost 2 million. While there is no algorithm for how many lives will be affected and in what ultimate capacity, the question remains: What actions should we take as followers of Christ in light of this knowledge.
