WORLD & CULTURE Christian Media Mike Novak

When it comes to the impact of Christian music, KLOVE/Air1 President and CEO Mike Novak has certainly been blessed to revel in the glory of how God is faithfully changing lives one listener at a time. “Music is the original form of worship,” Novak said. “And it’s important to remember what Isaiah 55:11 reminds us, that God’s Word does not come back void.” KLOVE and Air1 [EMF Broadcasting] is

no small operation. These national programs reach 24 million people a week. KLOVE’s pastors pray over 45,000 prayer requests a month and are available 24x7. “Something is going on here,” Novak said. “Hear me clear on this. This ministry belongs to God. It’s all Him. Everybody here knows who they really work for, I’m just the head sheepherder.” Novak is also a member of WJU’s Board

of Trustees, joining in 2013. “I’m all about supporting young people. I want to help to equip them, listen to them and make them part of the conversation,” Novak said. “The more time I spend with Dr. Jackson, the more I’ve realized we are more alike than not. We share much of the same intent, vision and expertise to further the kingdom in each of our circles so being a member of Jessup’s Board of Trustees really rang a bell with me.” For the past 18 years Novak has been hard

at work leading the KLOVE/Air1 team to transform a Christian music ministry into a successful radio network. When he started, there were 32 employees, now there are over 300 in Rocklin and roughly about 125 around

the country. “I really don’t have a clue why God uses us,” he said. “I really don’t. But He does. I have over 18 years of empirical proof showing that He does.” One of Novak’s favorite stories

demonstrating the impact of KLOVE/ Air1 occurred one day when the mailroom delivered a small package to Novak’s desk. “It was a little box with my name on it, so I opened it and out fell a 12 gauge shotgun shell with a note taped to it that said, ‘I want you to have this because I don’t need it anymore.’” Novak located the sender only to learn

of the hardships he experienced since coming back from deployment, including a hopelessness that, sitting in his truck one night, nearly led him to end his life. “He told me when he turned the ignition, his radio was tuned to KLOVE even though he didn’t tune in. What he heard changed his heart allowing him to submit to the Lord recognizing He had a bigger plan for his life.” Another story involved a sniper who

phoned in from Afghanistan. The sniper asked, “I need to know if God hates me?” The KLOVE pastor responded, “Why?” The caller replied, “Because I am murdering people. They don’t hear me, they don’t see me and they sometimes don’t know I’m there even after I’ve fired the shot.” The pastor discussed biblical examples of

warriors being used by God and provided other words of comfort but what was pivotal to Novak was that the sniper didn’t call his

wife, mom or friend. He called KLOVE. “People trust us and the anonymity of the phone. They say things that they would never say to their pastor but they will tell us. We get the raw truth. That really

provides a perfect example of the service we offer in the sense that we are privileged to reach out and comfort some of the most hurting, broken people in our world,” he said. Novak put it this way, “God’s word says the

way to the Father is through the Son, which is very narrow…but, the way to the Son is HUGE. Our job is to fill that up with every broken person we can find and let Him deal with it.” KLOVE/Air1 is on a mission to do just

that by targeting specific portions of the population such as KLOVE’s motorcycle ministry, Ride to Serve, a street ministry outreach helping food banks and churches. An avid motorcyclist himself, Novak came up with the idea as a natural extension of what he does. “At KLOVE/Air1, one of the things we talk about is being the hands and feet of Christ and pushing things away from us rather than pulling them to us. We want to empower our listeners with the tools they need and one way that we do so more effectively is by getting out and walking the walk ourselves.” KLOVE’s burgeoning impact can be seen

in numerous areas as it also sponsors events ranging from concerts, fan awards, cruises, the Dare to Dream School, Crisis Response Training, and The Bible Tour where popular artists bring the Bible to life through live performances of today's biggest songs paired with epic visuals from The Bible mini-series. “When it comes to our personal calling,

our responsibility is threefold,” Novak said. “First, we need to show up and pray; we need to make ourselves available. Second we do what we know how to do as well as we can do it and third, we get out of His way and say it’s all yours. We need to realize that God is counting on each one of us to bring our best to the table but then, we need to back up from the table and let Him do the rest. God puts it all together and makes something enormous, something we aren’t even capable of knowing about.”
