PUBLIC POLICY Phil Escamilla

Jessup’s Public Policy program has always been about preparing leaders to impact the public sector at the local, state and federal levels. At the local level, we will continue to partner with, and encourage active engagement in issues that are important to the local community. At the state level, we will speak into policy issues of continuing concern to lawmakers, including but not limited to corrections, water management and infrastructure. Given that California is known as a national trendsetter in policy making, our work at the state level will continue to be important. Finally, at the federal level, Public Policy will continue to engage partners from around the country on issues of national concern, including economic freedom, the sanctity of life and civil rights for all.

Looking ahead, it is clear that our world is rapidly changing as information becomes increasingly democratized and traditional institutions give way to more fluid, grassroots level movements. To meet the demands of this shifting landscape, Jessup’s Public Policy department not only continues to partner with traditional government institutions, but also seeks to increase influence in shaping the agendas and activities of thought leaders who are “on the front lines” at grassroots levels. For example, human trafficking is an issue that remained underground until Christians began to work with those serving off the radar in order to make a difference.

Additionally, there are many other issues of global concern that are ripe for thoughtful intervention based on solid research and a biblical perspective: global poverty, racial equality, and religious freedom around the world, to name a few. We recognize the breadth and depth of these challenges and realize our work of raising leaders up to confront these issues in the context of our larger Kingdom mission is only just beginning.

HISTORICAL

PERSPECTIVE Richard Ravalli

History majors at William Jessup University learn how to integrate faith with an understanding of the past. As we look toward the future, it is always important to remember where we have been. Jessup’s History department retains its strengths not only in emphasizing broad historical content and critical thinking, but in helping students see how history interrelates with various other areas of study, such as philosophy, theology, literature, and the arts.

Many people are talking today about the challenges faced by the humanities and liberal arts colleges in general, but this is one of the most exciting times to pursue a degree in a field like history. Promoting and emphasizing practical historical learning for our majors such as museum experience for example, comes quite naturally. As we move into the future, helping students grow intellectually and prepare for various careers is a great blessing. As a department, we anticipate working closely with students to help them achieve their goals and have access to more hands on historical projects in topics such as digital history or providing opportunities to engage in undergraduate research with their professors.
