JESSUP NEW @ JESSUP
COMPUTER
SCIENCES Beginning this fall, William Jessup University will offer a new major in Computer Science. Lead faculty member Dr. Joseph Liauw is currently teaching programming courses at Jessup and comes to the growing university from his position as director of software development at CCT Technologies, a corporation that provides diversity of technology offerings through its family of companies to deliver high- quality IT solutions, logistic services and IT products to local and state government, K-12 schools, higher education institutions and commercial businesses.
Dr. Liauw received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Lehigh University and has taught undergraduate courses in applied and theoretical computer science and graduate level courses in programming language design, compiler theory and implementation for several years at University of the Pacific, Seattle University and Wheaton College.
Dr. Liauw’s expertise is in commercial systems for online commerce and commercial software, programming language design and compilers, operating system design and implementation, computer networks and network programming. He has also authored two textbook manuscripts.
Te new program gives students multidisciplinary experiences and provides the knowledge and skills needed to be successful computing professionals or to pursue graduate studies. Courses emphasize reading and writing a variety of computer languages, with extensive experience in at least two high-level languages as well as proficiency in the use of various software development platforms and tools. By completing course projects and internships, students also have the opportunity to gain experiences in the professional marketplace.
Students also complete a capstone senior project as a first step toward professional competency and recognition in this widely recognized field.
“I spent 17 years working in the Silicon Valley,” Dr. Liauw explained. “Te experience made it abundantly clear to me that it is the responsibility of Christian schools to raise up and train computing practitioners and scholars who honor God, and unabashedly observe and obey His principles of ethics in their work and daily life. I have known for a long time that God has called me to take part in this endeavor; it is my prayer that He would give me the wisdom and strength to fulfill His calling.”

ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCES Another new major to roll out this fall is the Environmental Science program overseen by lead faculty member Michael McGrann. Dr. McGrann earned his Ph.D. from UC Davis and is already well-known by some Jessup students due to the three courses he has been teaching as an adjunct faculty member in the Biology department.
Te new program places strong emphasis on experiential scientific training in the field allowing students to explore greater breadth and diversity in their academic experiences, interests, and scientific training. Students will learn in the classroom and lab setting, but also apply their knowledge outside the classroom with fieldwork and internships.
Te Environmental Science program offers four areas of concentration. Two of the four concentrations will be offered this fall including Ecological Research and Ecology and Field Biology. Other concentrations will be offered as the program grows and include Geographic Information Science and Agriculture and Sustainability. Te new program also gives students opportunities to participate in internships in ecological and conservation- related research, government agencies, nonprofit environmental organizations, environmental consulting companies, educational institutions, and agricultural and forestry industries.
Dr. McGrann has participated in a wide range of conservation and applied ecological research projects having served with the California Department of Fish and Game as a wildlife
