NEWS DESK WHAT’S NEW IN MANUFACTURING n DMG MORI Brings Competition to the Frontlines C

HICAGO – As machine tools grow ever more sophisticat- ed, with the ability to deliver

near-perfect results, a big share of the competition between manu- facturing technology companies is moving to service and support. That’s especially true when it comes to application sup- port, where manufacturers want technology providers to help them use their complex machine tools to their full advantage—“build me an NC program to make this part in one shot!”—and often don’t have enough of the skilled employees to manage that task themselves. Nowhere is this shift more evident than at DMG MORI, the Japanese-German conglomerate that in September announced a tectonic shift in strategy in the US, where it would move to a direct-sales model, doubling its exist- ing service and sales centers in the US to 28 locations, including fi ve dealer technology centers, to better serve this changing need.

Manufacturing Engineering had the chance to sit down

with Dr. Masahiko Mori, President of DMG MORI Seiki Co., Ltd., and Dr. Thorsten Schmidt, CEO of DMG MORI USA, over a pre-Christmas dinner at the Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago, where they shared their vision of a fast- changing manufacturing future with a group of journalists.

After that ownership change was fi nalized in the fi rst half of the year, Dr. Mori and the DMG MORI team prepared to make big changes in the US market, which has become

Dr. Mori said that the investment in the US technology centers is the biggest “in one shot” he’s ever made in the business outside of a production facility.

The announcement of the new sales and service strat- egy capped a busy year for Dr. Mori, whose company, after a series of revised share offers, in early 2015 acquired a controlling interest of more than 52% in its German part- ner. The move was friendly—DMG MORI AG’s board had recommended that its shareholders take the offer from DMG

one of the most attractive manufacturing markets globally, as manufacturing faces continued challenges in much of Asia and Europe. Dr. Mori said that the investment in the new US centers was the biggest “in one shot” he’s ever made in the business outside of a production facility.
