GIVE & GO JOHN DANOWSKI

Competition is important, but practice is king for the U.S. and Duke coach

Who’s your favorite athlete?

There are so many great ones. I had a lot of men that I idolized, but Bill Bradley is my favorite. He played for the Knicks – a Rhodes Scholar, Princeton graduate.

What’s your favorite sports movie? So many good ones. Top three – Certainly “Bull Durham” has to be up there. “Mr. Baseball” with Tom Selleck is up there. I love that one. “Remember the Titans.” Denzel can’t make a bad movie.

What’s your favorite hobby?

I really don’t have any “hobby” hobbies. I’d like to get good at golf, I’d like to spend more time with photography and I’d like to learn how to play guitar.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done? Left Long Island and took the job at Duke.

What’s been the proudest moment of your career? It may have been when I received a certificate from Duke alumni naming me officially a “Duke Man.”

What’s most important for a lacrosse team to be successful? Our sport is a total team sport. It takes practice, coordination, getting to know your teammates, getting them to understand their strengths and weaknesses are, learning how to play with other people. ... To me, lacrosse is the greatest of all team sports, where I just believe in the value of team practice.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be the quarterback at Notre Dame and then I wanted to be a

quarterback in the NFL and then as I got older, I wanted to be high school science teacher, a head football coach and an assistant lacrosse coach in the spring.

What’s one thing lacrosse really needs?

Lacrosse needs a king. It needs a commissioner of lacrosse who could get everyone associated with lacrosse to sit down in a room — meaning the NLL, the MLL, college coaches, high school coaches, club coaches — and provide a vision for the future of the game.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Well, as long as I was healthy, it would be cheeseburger and fries.

OVERTIME FROM MARYLAND MIDFIELDER ZOE STUKENBERG: What’s your go-to deodorant scent? Either Swagger or Champion by Old Spice.

Guys who are obsessed with competition, who love to compete. That would be the No. 1 characteristic. They care about winning and losing, but they love to compete above all.

Pose a question for our next subject. Who is your favorite teacher or coach, and why?
