hy am I here? It’s a question all of us in lacrosse should ask ourselves regularly. Is it about you, or is about something bigger and more selfl ess? It’s also the question that was posed to more than 30 lacrosse industry leaders at a meeting we hosted Oct. 26. Growth trends in the sport are fl attening and lacrosse has never been more fragmented. How can the stakeholders of a sport
that showcases the importance of teamwork so effectively on the fi eld apply that principle successfully off of the fi eld? Collaboration requires trust, but parochial perspectives and increasing competition for market share have conspired to prevent key stakeholders from building trust. That’s changing. After an October afternoon of presentations and candid discussion, US Lacrosse and the equipment industry rallied around a common goal — the advancement of the Lacrosse Athlete Development Model as a fundamental strategy to expand participation and increase player retention. Make no mistake, this was history-making. Never before can I recall such a unifi ed commitment to the sport by such infl uential stakeholders. The key to such an accomplishment? A willingness to talk and trust each other. Committing to a more consistent dialogue is the fi rst step to building a relationship, strengthening trust and fostering collaboration. We need to lead by example here. US Lacrosse has an obligation to lead strategic conversation around the growth, health and direction of the sport, and there is no more important voice in that conversation than that of the equipment industry.
As so often is the case, far more unites us than separates us. Let’s see what we can accomplish together. Stay tuned.
