Vol. 40 No. 10 December 2016 EDITORIAL LACROSSE AT ITS BEST
IN HIS JOURNEY FROM THE LACROSSE FIELD TO THE BATTLEFIELD AND BACK, CAPT. BEN HARROW REPRESENTS THE BEST OF LACROSSE.
For the last 10 years, our December edition has been an ode to the best players, the biggest moments and the most compelling stories of the year. In 2011, we started calling it our Best of Lacrosse edition. The proliferation of digital and social media spawned the #BestOfLax hashtag and online voting campaigns. But this year, on the heels of a massive redesign and rebranding to US Lacrosse Magazine, we chose to identify the virtues — like determination, humility, camaraderie and innovation — that represent the best of our sport. We posed the question, “When was lacrosse at its best in 2016?”
On June 22, former Army player Capt. Ben Harrow strapped on his prosthetic legs to play lacrosse for the first time since losing both of his lower limbs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. It was not a big media event, though Shootout for Soldiers went on to raise $465,000 in eight cities. But in his journey from the lacrosse field to the battlefield and back, Harrow represented the best of lacrosse. We are honored to tell his story (“All the Way,” page 32) and feature him on the cover of this special edition.
Speaking of the best, we bid farewell to one of our best. Corey McLaughlin recently accepted a position as a managing editor for a financial publication. Corey had a nose for news and could craft a story — not just with words, but also with video and social media — as well as anyone in the sport. We will miss him, but at the same time we are excited to announce the promotion of Megan Schneider to the position of deputy editor as we forge forward with the new and improved US Lacrosse Magazine.
