RACHEL VANDER KOLK
The 2015 ACC Freshman of the Year is the next leader in aerospace engineering
What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome? My twin sister passed away when we were 16. To this day, I am still learning how to navigate without her. I try to live every day with her in mind, to not take any moment for granted.
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I’ve wanted to build airplanes since my first ride on one when I was 6. It’s pretty neat to be learning how they work now and to be able to design some aspects myself.
What type of animal would best describe your play? I tend to stick my tongue out when I play, pretty much every time I’m in the goal. My teammates think I look like a frog.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done? I went cliff jumping with my cousins at a hidden quarry in Iowa, though I’m not entirely sure how a drop that large came to be in the middle of corn fields.
What is your favorite inspirational quotation? “In the depths of winter, I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer.” It’s part of a longer quote by Albert Camus and also my most recent tattoo. My brother likes to joke that it sounds like something from “Game of Thrones.”

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Fettuccine alfredo. Every time I go to a restaurant and it’s on the menu, it’s game over. I can’t resist.
Where did you go on your last vacation? My older sister, Elly, and I went to Boston for the Suicide Prevention Overnight Walk. We raised money for the cause and walked 17 miles through the night. It was one of the most life-changing experiences I’ve ever had.
OVERTIME (from Princeton midfielder Zach Currier)
Would you rather fly or teleport? Fly. You’d get to have such a good view at the same time.
DOUBLE OVERTIME (from Jo Tokpah @ohsnapitzjo_) What do you recommend for high school goalies who want
to make it to college lacrosse one day? Be willing to put in the extra work outside of practice and play outside your comfort zone.
