BEACH, BOX AND YOGA
Unconventional training methods that will keep your players fresh and their skills sharp
BY KATE HICKMAN BEACH LAX
Jacksonville coach Mindy McCord takes advantage of the Florida sun to add variety to training sessions by holding occasional practices on the beach. While any college player would say yes to practice on the beach, this alternative training location provides more than just a beautiful setting. It is also a great environment for a tough workout. “It keeps practice fun and fresh,” McCord said. “We can do resistance training in the
water, we can run on the beach, we can do most any skill work and small-sided games.” To round out the experience, McCord incorporates team bonding with sand castle building competitions and beach volleyball. “Honestly, if you have up to 20 hours a week for lacrosse training, giving a few hours of diversity and other competitions that get their competitive juices flowing will give them a break from their sport, so that they are more excited and fresh to come back to it,” McCord said.

Change up your practice location from time to time, and incorporate other competitive sports as conditioning. Being in a new environment encourages teamwork and gives players a healthy break from the grind. Try adding a 30-minute game — like kickball, soccer or handball — even if you can’t get away.

By the time April hits, college teams have been training hard for months and are reaching the peak of their season. While every coach brings unique ideas, coaching styles, schemes and tactics to his or her program, all would agree that practicing the same way, day in and day out, becomes counterproductive.
For that reason, many coaches have incorporated non- traditional training methods into their preparations to keep athletes invested, excited, motivated and fit while also continuing to hone their game. These are just a sampling, but perhaps they could jumpstart some creativity for your own program, team or club.
