THE SOUTHERN VIBE
T
wo brothers grew up in southern Georgia. They worked on their dad’s dirt farm. The older brother, Randy, became
an electrician and, later, a banker. The younger brother, Steve, retired from the Navy and now operates a tugboat off of Alabama’s Gulf Coast.
But in 2004-05, we all converged on a tiny sliver of island called Point O’ Woods, N.Y., a centuries old beach community nestled between the Great South Bay and Atlantic Ocean amidst pines and marsh. Steve managed the maintenance crew — I was swapping brakes on his pickup when offered a job by US Lacrosse. Randy was the electrician in a place where darkness prevails and million- dollar homes have 19th-
century infrastructure. From these two, I learned
more in one year than I did in four years of college. “Send ’em to school, buy ’em books and they chew the covers right off of ’em,” Randy would say.
Randy also never missed a chance to poke fun at my new profession. “Lay-cross? There’s no lay-cross in Georgia. ’Cept when we lay ’cross the couch, or lay ’cross the bed,” he’d joke. A lot has changed. Georgia native and MLL all-star Scott Ratliff attests to that in a story (“Georgia’s New Favorite Sport,” page 22) to kick off our MLL preview. The southern vibe continues with a follow-up on Connor McKemey (“Beneath the Scars,” page 32), the burn survivor whose incredible comeback led him to High Point — one of several teams causing chaos out of the SoCon. And speaking of comebacks, we follow Stanford’s Anna Salemo into the depths of depression, her recovery and her reemergence with the Cardinal (“Out of the Darkness,” page 16). It’s been a wild season. Follow

2 LACROSSE MAGAZINE »April 2016 LM VAULT ODE TO THE IVIES APRIL 1991
About 110 years after Harvard won the fi rst Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association championship, Meg Culhane, then the assistant sports information director at Cornell, penned a feature for Lacrosse Magazine examining how the Ivy League programs were still going strong. Despite misperceptions over scholarship availability and fi nancial aid, the story noted the historical success of the conference and a newfound power in Princeton under coach Bill Tierney. Plus, Yale midfi elder Jon Reese, who in 1990 set the NCAA Division I record
for goals in a season (82), which was tied by Albany’s Miles Thompson in 2014.
Accompanying the article were the above pictures of an
unidentifi ed Penn defenseman from 1920 and John Clement, a defenseman from Penn’s 1991 team. LM photographer Kevin P. Tucker took the image of Clement (and the one used on the April 1991 cover). And 25 years later, this season, Tucker also shot the image above (right) of Penn attackman Nick Doktor from the Quakers’ 12-10 win against Michigan.
