4 STEPS
I have a four-step footwork routine. If you go directly toward the goal, the defenders on the sides of you will probably be able to get a piece of your stick. Seal off one of your defenders, or get them on your hips with your hands free.
STICK
When I get low in my stance, I bring my stick in between my shoulders. Because I want to take four steps before getting in, I’m not worried about having my stick up ready to shoot until the last step. On my fourth step, I’ll bring it up quickly. It’s easier to run and protect your stick if it’s down in between your shoulders.
DIRECTION
My body is going toward my right side, freeing up my left hand and creating more space between the defender on my left and my stick.

Having an opportunity to play in the summertime is great for those who are
still playing to stay in shape and stay fresh, and for those girls who have been really missing lacrosse, have real grown-up jobs and need a little bit of activity in their lives and good ol’ competition with people they played against in college. If everything gets going, it will be awesome for kids to watch and help grow the game.
U.S. PLAYERS, YALE COACHES
It’s great [coaching with Erica LaGrow and Sloane Serpe]. We’re all extremely competitive people. We’ve all played, or are playing, at the highest level.
» The goal isn’t going to move, so watch the ref. You know she’s going to blow the whistle when her cheeks puff out. Get a jump on that.
EYES GOALIE » Shoot where the
goalie isn’t. You want them to follow you across the cage and dump it right back where they were.
SHOOT » Most goalies on I
f you get the hanging hash, draw your adjacent defenders. Then you can fi nd an easy draw and dump with another attacker around the 8-meter. That was a big thing at Syracuse. Everyone on the 8-meter is engaged because the defenders are coached to crash the girl on the hash.
free positions expect low to high. Certain goalies will just bite on low fakes, but they’re very good when you shoot it low. If that’s the case, then I would fake low and go high. Throw a little hitch fake, a half-cradle, so they freeze and stand up. As they’re freezing, that’s when you shoot. Hips and lower, on the left and right sides, are great spots to shoot if you hitch a goalie.
