BUCKEYE NATION Off the Field //

AS TOLD TO COREY MCLAUGHLIN

Ohio State and U.S. U19 head coach Nick Myers in the fall held court on his home turf, inviting the U.S. group to Columbus, Ohio, for a training weekend in preparation for this summer’s FIL U19 World Championship. LM tagged along, and Myers gave us a tour of the Buckeyes’ facilities. “We’re proud of the ability to have these incredible facilities but also have the opportunity to have it so accessible,” he said.

Take a video tour of the Ohio State facilities at

Outside, we’ve got two turf fields, film towers and lights. We spend a lot of time there preparing for the season.

EQUIPMENT ROOM

We’re fortunate to be sponsored by Nike and STX. Practice gloves, game day gloves, custom stuff is just an example. When we travel, the [players] all have their own numbered bins. [They] come up to the window, they get hooked up for the weekend. If they break a shaft, stick, head, coach Mark Bergey, our director of operations, takes care of them makes sure they have everything they have.

WEIGHT ROOM FUEL ZONE

The Fuel Zone is about a year old. This is a difference-maker. Being a morning team, the men will come in in the offseason 7-7:15 a.m., and meet our nutritionist here. You have breakfast sandwiches, sushi, yogurts, Naked juice, almonds, banana chips. Healthy snacks.

Just about anything you can grab and go. They’ll come in, grab something before practice, before we train, maybe burn 1,000 calories and then after come back and get Muscle Milk, snacks, to re-fuel and make their way over to campus. This is all paid for by the athletic department.

This is where we’ve been training for almost 10 years. Going back to the former football staff of Coach Tressel and now Coach Meyer, we are really the only other team that uses this space. In late fall, we’re in here three days a week, just over 10,000 square feet. It’s not rare to have some of the NFL guys back on their bye week. We’re fortunate to have the opportunity to train here.

BUCKEYE BEACH

This is space for training just off our turf fields. Men that are maybe working back from an injury, this is where they can train or get some extra training. They will be here in the offseason, too. A lot of the things we do from a speed school standpoint will be done here in the sand.
