is not your typical preservation group. It has no museum (and has no inten- tion of establishing one). Instead, it sup- ports the restoration and operation of former Philadelphia streetcars at other museums in the northeast. Thus far, the organization has granted over $150,000 to various projects. The story of the Friends and the cooperation among the groups that attend Winterfest is some- thing we’ll address in a future PRESERVA- TION TOPICS column. — S.B.


RAILFAN’s New Hometown Railroad Last summer the office of R&R moved


from its longtime home of Newton, N.J., to the southern part of the state in Swedesboro. Our new town is served by two railroads, Conrail Shared Assets and Southern Railroad of New Jersey (although Conrail comes to town only to interchange with SRNJ; it has no customers here). Both railroads are operating on a segment of the Salem Branch, which was part of the Pennsyl- vania-Reading Seashore Lines (and the West Jersey & Seashore before that). Our old town of Newton was served by


the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western’s Sussex Branch, which was abandoned by the time RAILFAN was established in 1974. So with the move, R&R is finally located in a town that actually has train service, right? Well, sort of... The Salem Branch has seen an erosion


of its business that accelerated over the past decade. At one time a manufactur- ing facility and a glass plant at the end of the line in Salem provided enough traffic for three-times-a-week service in the 1990s. Those were quite the color-


ful days. The EMD F3 diesels owned by the Tri-State Railway Historical Society and the Anthracite Railroads Histori- cal Society were located here, painted in the tangerine-and-blue of the Jersey Central, making for quite a sight. (Those units are now painted for the DL&W and live at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pa.) Both businesses in Salem stopped using rail, and finally the only regular customer on the line was the Farmers Exchange in Woodstown, about halfway between Swedesboro and Salem, which receives a handful of covered hoppers full of fertilizer each spring. Since R&R moved to Swedesboro last year, the only train on the Salem Branch was to take empty cars back to Conrail last summer. During the fall, the line was rehabili-


tated using federal funds (it is owned by Salem County), including a new bridge over Oldman’s Creek south of Swedes- boro. Then in mid-February of this year, Conrail wandered down to Swedesboro to drop off covered hoppers destined for Woodstown. I was busy putting photo captions into this month’s PHOTO LINE feature when I got a phone call — a crew was on duty in Swedesboro, and the Salem Branch was about to emerge from its months-long slumber. Of course, the shot I had to get was the first train cross- ing over the new Oldman’s Creek bridge. Well, trees obscured the shot from the


sunny side of the bridge, but sometimes the historic record is more important than a technically perfect photo (above). I chased the train down to Woodstown, where the crew tied up. There is another covered hopper in Swedesboro that needs to come to Woods- town. After that? The empties need to go back to Conrail, and then R&R’s home- town railroad might be due for another long slumber. — S.B.
