Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Steam Locomotive Trust is moving forward toward the construction of No. 5550, which will become the 53rd member of the streamlined T1 class of 4-4-4-4 steam locomotives. The iconic prow designed by industrial designer Raymond Loewy was recreated from original blueprints that were converted to precision CAD fi les. Those drawings were used to create the parts that were shipped to Curry Rail Services in Holidaysburg, Pa., for assembly. PHOTOS COURTESY PRR T1 TRUST
CNC machines can cut precision parts in just a few hours. Just like the original T1 locomotives,
5550’s cab and the prow are made primar- ily of aircraft-grade aluminum. The grace and beauty of the original streamlined designs created by Raymond Loewy are evident. The prow is well under construc- tion, and the pieces of the locomotive’s cab have been delivered to Curry Rail Services in Hollidaysburg, Pa., for assem- bly. The total estimated cost of the prow is just under $20,000 and the expected time frame for completion is 4-6 months. Among the growing list of T1 Trust corpo- rate sponsors, CRS is a premier provid- er of locomotive products to the railroad industry. Pennsy faithful will rejoice in the fact that the cab for 5550 is to be built in the former Samuel Rea Car Shops, now occupied by Curry Rail.
We are also pleased to announce the addition of Doyle McCormack to our board of directors. A name long synon- ymous with mainline steam preserva- tion, Doyle brings more than 40 years of valuable professional experience to our organization. The T1 Trust is bringing back a grace-
ful and powerful steam locomotive one crticial piece at a time. As 5550 begins to take shape, it is clear the dream is becom- ing one step closer to reality. Please join us in a concerted effort to make 2017 an even more productive year.
