I would like to extend special thanks to the air traffic controllers of New York Approach (Catskill Sector), Albany Approach, Lebanon Tower, and Burlington Approach and Tower for assisting me during the many flights required to scout and capture the images for this feature. —D.S.

Burlington’s Waterfront Yard — PREVIOUS PAGES The Vermont Railway yard in Burlington sits along the waterfront of Lake Champlain, at the western edge of the downtown area. At the upper left we see the terminal for the ferry to Port Kent, N.Y., on the western shore of the lake, and the marina. Directly to the east (right) of the ferry terminal is the canopy for the station platform; the station itself is the beige building slightly farther east, with the dark green-and-white roof. The former the right-of-way of the Rutland Railroad’s Champlain Lake Extension is now the Island Line recreational trail (some sections are paved medium green). The rail yard itself features a functioning turntable serving a seven-stall roundhouse holding at the time of this photo four locomotives. A large collection of wheels and axles line the side and back of the roundhouse area to supply the shop forces here. May 20, 2016.
