was never intended to be a historical novel. Button shares some common words in a colorful vocabulary with Lu- cius Beebe — that’s the kind of thing you can get from Beebe’s writings. And per- haps they have a similar writing style (though Button is more edited), but as far as being an insensitive lout whose behavior is influenced by circumstances, that’s all made-up character develop- ment for Button. R&R: Why is the book titled The Din-
ing Car? It is, after all, “private varnish.” EP: I knew it was a matter of time be-
fore this issue surfaced. My working ti- tle for the book was Food and Wine. My editor, Jennifer Silva Redmond, talked me out of it. I challenged her to bring me a better title, and soon her brother came back with The Dining Car. In fact, I then countered with The Business Car, and with Private Varnish, but by this time we had the cover designed — that beautiful photograph of looking in the window at a formally set dining table. Neither Business Car nor Private Var- nish evoked the emotion we were trying to get with the combination of book title and cover. We wanted the feeling of be- ing an outsider getting a glimpse into a world of privilege and wealth. The term “dining car” evokes visions of fine china, white linen tablecloths, heavy flatware, sumptuous food, fine wines, and atten-
