In addition to brucellosis, feral swine harbor pseudorabies, a virus that is fatal in animals, including hog dogs. “Wild swine carry a 20 to 25 percent prevalence of pseudorabies in

Oklahoma and around the country, and there’s no real treatment,” Roach says. “I’ve seen it kill many dogs that get bit.”

Hog Licenses and Permits For those who hunt feral hogs, the ODAFF provides licenses for swine transport and handling/hunting facilities. Although hogs are not consid- ered wildlife, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation offers hog hunting guidelines in its annually distributed book of regulations. Landowners experiencing damage may contact their local game warden to request a free permit and harvest feral swine during Oklahoma’s big game seasons. Those hunting on public lands must acquire the appropri- ate game license for the current season.

An Uphill Battle

Ag experts say feral swine were fi rst detected in the southwestern part of the state but now have been reported in all 77 counties. “Unfortunately, we don’t see hogs until real damage starts to occur, and when real damage occurs it’s too late,” Gaskamp says. “We’ll be fi ghting the population for the rest of our days.” In addition to research ongoing at the Noble Foundation, ODAFF

offi cials say the National Ag Statistics Service is collecting surveys from other states in an effort to more accurately estimate the feral swine population.

THE BOARBUSTER SYSTEM Kiwash Electric Cooperative member WW Livestock Systems is the exclu-

sive marketer and manufacturer of the BoarBuster feral hog trap, developed by researchers at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Located in Thomas, Okla., WW produces a complete line of cattle handling equipment, rodeo equipment, horse stalls and round pens. The company be- gan building and shipping BoarBuster traps in July 2015. WW sales manager Sam Eck says orders are fl ooding in from a regional audience as word spreads of its potential for effectively trapping large groups of hogs. “Our largest demographic for the product has been landowners in Texas

and southern Oklahoma,” Eck says. The mobile device resembles a traditional corral trap suspended in the air.

Users can monitor the trap through live streaming video and remotely deploy the system when a group of hogs walks underneath the equipment. The BoarBuster’s $5,995 price includes the cost of a trap and camera. Users sign no annual contracts and are billed a monthly fee of $69 for cellular service. “It’s an Oklahoma product from start to fi nish,” Eck says. “The cameras

also are made by a company in Oklahoma.” For a list of BoarBuster dealers in Oklahoma and nationwide, call 1-800- 999-1214 or visit www.boarbuster.com
