superservices Prepaid Puts You In Control

The perfect plan for families, elderly or anyone who wants pay-as-you-go convenience

find there’s a lot to love about East Central Electric’s prepaid plan.

For one, members enrolled in the prepaid program aren’t locked into ECE’s traditional billing schedule and payment due dates. That includes no more late fees, no deposits, and no disconnect notices.

Instead, prepaid members pay for their electricity in advance. “For members who have trouble stretching a paycheck over the whole month, prepaid is an excellent solution,” said Tamara Hawkins, manager of office services.

Prepaid’s voluntary, opt-in system gives co-op members greater control over their budgeting practices. With prepaid, you can deposit funds when you are paid, rather than paying once a month.

Another advantage: Prepaid members never have to come up with a large deposit, and they never incur late fees or interest. “When an account balance gets low, we notify the account holder by sending a text message, email or telephone call, whichever they prefer,” she explained.

Members can also monitor their usage on any mobile device by using the Smart Hub app or logging on to www.ecoec.com.

When the account balance reaches zero, the service is disconnected, but it’s reconnected almost immediately after you make another payment. How much you

pay depends on you, but you will need to put a minimum $25 credit on your account to begin participating in prepaid billing.

One more benefit of participating in the prepaid program: Studies show prepaid customers tend to become much wiser about their energy use. That results in savings of 10 to 25 percent on average.

Phone chargers can add to your electric bill

Between the price of the phone and the cost of the service, a smartphone is a pretty big investment. Don’t add to the cost by wasting electricity while you charge it up.

If your phone is plugged into a charger that’s plugged into the wall, it’s using electricity. If the phone is fully charged and it’s still plugged in, it’s still using electricity.

If you unplug your phone but leave the charger plugged into the wall, that charger is still using electricity.

Charging your phone—or even leaving the charger plugged in without the phone—wastes very little energy. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the average home wastes about $100 a year on “phantom energy” from electronic devices that remain plugged in when not in use.

But why waste and pay for energy that you’re not using? Simply plug chargers and other digital equipment into power strips, and unplug the power strip when you’re not using the devices.

Energy Efficiency Tip of the Month

Reduce energy for water heating. Take simple steps like lowering your heater’s temperature and installing low-flow shower heads to reduce your water heating bills.
