Jack Perkins retires after nearly 38 years at TCEC
Jack Perkins started his career with cooperatives as a night dispatcher at Northfork Electric Cooperative in Sayre while attending junior college. At Northfork Electric, he swept the fl oors, helped with billing and answered the phone. He worked his way to chief executive offi cer (CEO) from the ground up in the electric industry.
After
graduating from
Oklahoma State
University, Jack began his full time co-op career as assistant to the general manager at Southwest Rural Electric Cooperative in Tipton. From there, Jack and his wife Vanda moved to Hooker in 1979 when he began managing inside operations for TCEC. Jack began serving as the fi fth CEO of the cooperative in 1986. After 31 years at the helm of this cooperative, Jack worked his last day at TCEC in January 2017.
“Jack was a progressive, forward-thinking leader,” said Zac Perkins, who became CEO in January. “He recognized we couldn’t keep doing things the way they’d always been done and helped the cooperative adapt to a changing business climate.”
Some of the accomplishments of Jack’s career include ushering in bylaw changes to improve the election process for trustees in the 1980s, helping to get House Bill 1845 regarding easements passed in the 1990s, acquiring service territory from Xcel Energy in the 2000s and helping the cooperative to weather major ice storms in 1979 and 2006-2007.
More recently, Jack led several efforts to position the cooperative District 2 Trustee Vacancy
Following the December resignation of Erwin Elms, the trustee representing members of TCEC District 2, there is a vacancy on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Elms is moving outside the TCEC service territory. In a future meeting, the Board of Trustees will decide how to fi ll the vacancy for the remainder of the term. The cooperative’s Bylaws, found at
www.tcec.coop, outline the process for selecting trustees and also the responsibilities of trustees. Members interested in fi lling this vacancy must be a residential member of District 2. to meet the needs of members today and in the future. He led efforts to restructure the organization, construct a new facility and make TCEC the fi rst in Oklahoma to offer community solar.
“Jack really got to know cooperative members and employees,” said Lyle Mathis, vice president of Operations. “He had a knack for recognizing members and remembering their names. I’d often see him in the halls or the breakroom talking to folks.”
Zac Perkins adds, “Jack fostered a real family atmosphere here. We don’t want that to change.”
Jack’s legacy of progressive leadership and dedication to doing what is right for the member will continue at TCEC. n
