◗ Many of Joe Smith’s welded creations take a considerable amount of time to make. The roadrunner was fashioned using a wire welder and took about six weeks to fi nish.

◗ Smith, who is ever humble and does not consider himself to be an artist, taught himself to weld. When asked where he gets his creative ideas, he said, “from this, that and something else.”

◗ Along with numerous ornaments large and small, Smith said he’s made four or fi ve peacocks. Although he’s replicated the process, he said, “it’s terrible to get them to balance,” as they use rocks as counterweights to help them bob up and down. Being the professional he is, he manages to make it work every time.
