Approximately 462 members registered for the event, which took place at the Southeast Expo building in McAlester. Reporting on KEC’s progress over the year, CEO Jim Jackson told members purchased power costs for the co-op decreased by 2 percent, “which means your co-op did a good job of managing power costs,” he said. Power purchased from wholesale power suppliers accounts for 61 percent of KEC’s expenses.

Maintaining affordable rates and stable finances while keeping service reliable is KEC’s main goal, Jackson said. That success is measured in the co-op’s ability to return margins to members through capital credit retirements. This year, KEC retired $706,892.61 in capital credits. “This is the cooperative way,” Jackson pointed out. “We give our margins back to you, not to investors in New York City.”

Co-op members enjoy the prizes given away at the Kiamichi Electric Annual Meeting on October 3. Many members carried home valuable freebies from the meeting including cookware, small appliances, electronics and more. For photos of prize winners, please turn to page 7.

KEC continues to improve its system reliability through improved right of way maintenance. For every dollar a member pays to KEC, eight cents is spent on right of way trimming and brush control. This money is paying off in reduced outage time, Jackson told members. Over the past five years, KEC has shaved two and half hours off its cumulative outage time due to improved right of way maintenance.
