THE VIRTUAL LIFETIME ELEC- TRONIC RECORD HEALTH INFOR- MATION EXCHANGE INITIATIVE (VLER HIE) is a secure network that shares health care informa- tion. Through this initiative, military and civilian health care providers that have joined the eHealth Exchange can access beneficiaries’ health in- formation electronically. The VLER HIE already connects the DoD and VA health care systems, and effective June 1, 2016, the VLER HIE also will integrate with TRICARE network health care providers. Sharing medical information

through the eHealth Exchange pro- vides your health care team a holistic view of your health records, such as historical information, prescriptions, allergies, immunizations, etcet- era. Health information marked as sensitive (e.g., treatment for sexual assault, substance abuse, mental health concerns, and sexually trans- mitted diseases) will not be shared through the exchange. Beneficiaries will be opted into

the eHealth Exchange automatically; this will include the health records of anyone who has received care at a military treatment facility in the past 20 years. Active duty servicemembers are

required to participate in the eHealth Exchange, but other beneficiaries may choose to opt out. Those who opt out may opt back in at any time. To learn more about the TRICARE VLER HIE program or to find instruc- tions for opting out or opting back in, visit www.tricare.mil/vler. —Elizabeth Golden, MOAA member service representative
