Prostate Cancer Test I would like to take a moment and comment on the [prostate-specific antigen (PSA)] test, as I am presently in a treatment program for prostate cancer and feel I have some perti- nent comments that may be very use- ful to anyone in my age group. First, some background: I am


73, and I was due for my annual blood work last September. My wife (luckily a registered nurse) noticed that no PSA had been ordered. My attitude was “PSA, schmee

SA,” but she unmercifully harassed me until I called the doctor and had her add it to the other tests. When the results came back, I got a very worried call from the doctor tell- ing me that my PSA was high and she was making me an appointment with a urologist. Of course, I was sure it was a


mistake, and the urologist wanted to be sure, so he did one also and it came back even higher! Normal is 0-4, and mine was 70!


I had no symptoms whatsoever,


and I was still sure it was a mistake, but the urologist did a biopsy and found all samples full of cancer, with a Gleason 9 on a scale of 1-10. This was not a good thing. The only good news in the whole thing was that, after a CT scan and bone scan, we found it had not yet spread. After a consultation with the on-


cologist, we decided that hormone shots (to be sure it didn’t spread) and CyberKnife (to kill what was
