Never Stop Serving P
reventing and ending veteran homeless- ness is the mission of 21-year veteran pilot Lt. Col. Deborah L. Snyder, USA (Ret). Through
her nonprofit, Operation Renewed Hope Foundation (
www.operationrenewedhopefoundation.org), she helps veterans become self-sufficient by tackling housing first. How did the organization come about? I purchased a home a few years ago [and] said to my husband, “Why don’t we put home- less people in there?” Then I found out how many home- less veterans there were, and I couldn’t believe it — over 68,000 nationwide. We de- cided to do something about it, starting with our own backyard. What does your organization do? We provide quality housing and supportive services to our nation’s homeless veterans. In our four short years, we have helped more than 400 veterans and their families get into or stay in their homes here in the D.C. metro area. How is your organization run? I am a volun- teer CEO/president, and we have a voluntary board of directors and advisory board. Enabled by a VA grant, our employees include a direc- tor of supportive services for veteran families,
a housing and resource director, an [admin- istrative assistant]/bookkeeper, four case managers, and an employment and housing coordinator. Along with a director for cor- porate and celebrity events, we have a cast of volunteers to help with veteran assis- tance and fundraisers. We hold three signature events: a Purple and Gold Gala, a char- ity golf scramble, and a Color It Purple Fashion Show. With this great group of folks, we are able to help 80 to 100 veterans and their families out of home- lessness. We are working diligently to raise money to buy, renovate, and operate a
55-unit former assisted-living facility so that we can help more
veterans achieve and sustain a bet- ter life. Many of the veterans we have assisted now work with us —
still serving and paying it forward. Why MOAA life membership? Because MOAA is a strong advocate for veterans and their families and embraces the military values I respect and endorse.
