connection between a college coach and his players, especially in this case. It’s seldom about swing instruction and only occasionally about course strategy. More often, the lessons run deeper.

Desimone’s reign: No direct funding from the university. And the


Bears still fielded strong teams year after year, usually with impressive grade-point averages.


“Des doesn’t know a ton about


technique, but he knows a lot about attitude and discipline and being cou- rageous in the moment,” Homa says. “That’s what he instilled in us.” Still, none of this is possible unless


Desimone finds a way to fund Cal’s golf program. Brunk was an instru- mental figure in this regard, helping found the Cal men’s golf committee, the program’s fund-raising arm. Desimone estimates the efforts


raised more than $25 million in his time as head coach. The program’s endowment hit $9.5 million earlier this year, with a chance to reach its $12 million goal (and full endow- ment) in the next year. That would cover the annual budget of approxi- mately $600,000.
