HISTORIC WATER DEAL O

ne course that got hit especially hard by the 2014 drought was Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. Not only was it a dry year, but the city of Santa

Cruz cut the water irrigation supply to the Alister MacKenzie-designed gem in half. As general manager Scott Hoyt described it, “it was firm,

fast, brown and dead.” Those bad days at Pasatiempo are now in the past.

Recently, the club signed a 30-year agreement with the neighboring community of Scotts Valley to acquire a mini- mum of 35 million gallons of water annually that previously went out to sea. “We started this quest to acquire the recycled water as a

security play and it evolved into cost savings on irrigation wa- ter as well as securing the water,” said Hoyt of the deal, which had been in the works for three decades. “We have secured the most vital asset of any golf course at a price that will allow us to continue to reinvest in this historic golf course.”

FOR PASATIEMPO Iconic MacKenzie layout will have three water sources to combat drought

As a bonus, the club will pay $1.6 million spread over the next five years—the entire cost of the water up front. That leaves the club with no costs the final 25 years of the agreement. After year-five, the club will save about $600,000 annually from what the cost would be if it were to just purchase potable water from the City of Santa Cruz (if it’s even available). After 10 years, the club is forecasting cost savings of over $1 million annually for 100% potable water. In addition, the club recently took out a loan to fund

a currently on-going $8 million project that will result in a 500,000-gallon storage tank with its own pumping and filtration system. “We will be one of the very few golf courses that will

have access to three sources for irrigation water,” Hoyt said. “I’m proud and honored to be a part of Pasatiempo and securing its future.”
