Lake Tahoe

rollercoaster. The most memorable shot is No. 13, a 205-yard par 3 that plays 40 yards downhill, not including further altitude adjustments (the ball goes 10% farther once you reach Lake Tahoe and its 6,200 feet of elevation). A tip of the cap to former NCGA board member Brad Bell on his masterpiece—one that doesn’t include a home on the property. Truckee’s toughest test is tree-

lined Tahoe Donner, which owns a course record of just 4-under 68— the second highest in all of North- ern California. The best lake views can be found at Incline Village’s par 58 Mountain Course—an exacting executive course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. (the Championship Course was done by Robert Trent Jones Sr.). The Mountain Course also includes fun family events on Sundays with two flags on each green. The Championship Course at Incline Village (which was touched

up by Kyle Phillips in 2005) also catches some spectacular glimpses of the lake, and frequently highlights your drives with some of the prettiest shots in golf—a tee shot majestically rising against the Sierras. If you want to play a week or

longer around Truckee, ski resort titans Northstar and the Resort at Squaw Creek boast unique layouts, or you can take off an hour north into the High Sierra toward Graeagle for remote but spectacular golf. Grizzly Ranch is a beautiful brute featuring a picturesque finishing hole that rivals Edgewood, while Whitehawk Ranch and Nakoma are also worth the drive. And better yet, all three courses offer NCGA-friendly rates. And if you need more golf (or

maybe a little less), you can also check out the towering pines and tiny greens at Old Brockway—one of The Golf Channel’s Best 9-Hole Courses in the U.S., as well as the site of Bing

Crosby’s pre-Clambake celebrity shenanigans in 1934-35.

Winnings + + + + +

T

he green fees at Edgewood Tahoe approach $250 at the height of the summer, but don’t mistake the price tag for some

lakeside markup or television-induced inflation. The site of the annual American Century Celebrity Championship produces a special round, long before you reach the killer closing three holes along the lake. So if you get hot at the blackjack tables, hit a long-shot parlay or cash in on that freaky Giants even-num- bered-year thing, spoil yourself with a round at Edgewood.
