MPCC’s New Dunes Course Another ‘Home Run’

for this past February’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, a number of PGA Tour officials inquired about the then on-going renovation of the Dunes Course. “They didn’t get why we were

W

renovating the Dunes. They were saying things like, ‘You already had a home run with the Shore Course. You know the pros don’t like new courses,’” said longtime MPCC superintendent Bob Zoller. “Then they took a tour and were like, ‘Okay, now we

understand it.” Thirteen years after late archi-

tect Michael Strantz took the Shore Course to new heights, architect Tom Fazio has transformed the Dunes Course into a second gem. Fazio’s team have made the Dunes

a dunes layout. Through a lot of grad- ing, around 13 acres of new dunes areas were created. Highlights of the new look in-

clude the seaside par-3 14th, which has been enhanced by more natural bunkering and the addition of a transplanted cypress tree that frames the view. The formerly short par-5 9th, meanwhile, has been extended 45 yards, with the green moved back into a natural dunes setting. While now breathtaking, the reno-

vation was also practical. According to Zoller, the Dunes Course was in need of a new irrigation system. For drought purposes, previously irrigated turf was reduced by 20%. What was a tee to green cart path has also been removed, following in lines with the more natural routing path of the Shore Course. “All of the holes are in the same

envelope but it’s a totally different property,” Zoller said. ‘The ‘wow’ that I feel is that I feel like we have 13-14 new holes.” Now, it’s just a matter of time

before the Dunes joins the AT&T Pro-Am rotation.
