formations provide a scenic backdrop for nesting birds such as blue-footed boobies. Explore the coast by panga, or, conditions permitting, go snorkeling – possibly with penguins! Meals BLD

7.  RÁBIDA & SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS Rábida (Jervis) Island is famous for its dark red beach (created from its high iron content) and its lounging sea lions. A wet landing on the beach reveals young and old sea lions incredibly unafraid of visitors. Marine iguanas and yellow warblers share the shores here too, adding to the island’s natural enchantment; enjoy snorkeling or a glass-bottom boat ride to see the marine life swimming below the water. After lunch, a dry landing at Cerro Dragón (Dragon Hill) on the northwestern side of Santa Cruz Island leads you along a fascinating wildlife-rich trail for this afternoon’s hike. Look for Galápagos land iguanas, miniature dragons that roam around the island in search of their favorite cactus snack, before returning to the ship. Meals BLD

8. DISEMBARK / FLY TO GUAYAQUIL Disembark Isabela II in Baltra for your flight to Guayaquil; spend time at leisure, perhaps strolling the boardwalk along the Guayas River that features historical monuments. Tonight, join us for a farewell reception and dinner at the hotel. Meals BD

9. JOURNEY HOME Tour ends: Guayaquil. Fly home anytime. A transfer from Oro Verde Guayaquil to José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport is included. Allow three hours for flight check-in. Meals B

THANK YOU, MR. DARWIN!

First came 17th-century pirates and buccaneers – French, Dutch and English adventurers who used the Galápagos as a base for looting Spanish convoys and towns on South America’s coast. In the early 18th century, British and American whalers discovered the sperm whale-rich waters of the archipelago and seriously depleted the whale and tortoise populations. It wasn’t until 1859 when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, arguing his natural selection theory of evolution, based on his discoveries in the islands, that the uniqueness of Galápagos wildlife began to be understood, eventually inspiring conservationists from around the world.
