guided tour of the lovely 2nd-century Teatro Greco, built by the Greeks and remodeled by the Romans. A short walk takes you along the city’s main thoroughfare, Corso Umberto, lined with beautifully restored medieval buildings and offshoots of winding streets filled with shops, bars and restaurants. You may return to ship for lunch or enjoy lunch here on your own. Meals BLD

9.  SIRACUSA & ORTIGIA Le Ponant docks at Porta Marina on Ortigia Island this morning for a visit to Siracusa on the Sicilian mainland. From here a drive to Parco Archeologico della Neapolis brings you for a visit to its 15,000-seat Greek Theatre and the Latomia del Paradiso, an ancient limestone quarry that is resplendent today with gardens of orange and olive trees. Back on Ortigia, take a walking tour of the 6th-century Temple of Apollo – transformed over the centuries as a Byzantine church, a Muslim mosque and then a Norman church – and the Baroque duomo. Enjoy lunch back onboard, or perhaps on your own, along seaside Passeggio Adorno before cruising continues late this afternoon. Meals BLD

10. DISEMBARK SHIP / MALTA Your introduction to Malta, where Le Ponant docks this morning, begins with a drive around colorful St. Julian’s Bay and a walking tour amongst the medieval and Baroque palaces that line the lanes of ancient Mdina, once home to the city’s nobility. Head next to your hotel where you’ll have time to check in for your overnight stay and have lunch. Later this afternoon, you’ll be met by a local guide for a walking tour of Valletta, Malta’s capital city. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, named so for being “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.” On a guided walking tour, visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral, built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. Join us this evening for a farewell dinner at the hotel. Meals BLD
