11. A DAY WELL SPENT IN LONDON First stop is the Tower of London, the ancient heart of the city, where you’ll get in ahead of the crowds. OCCUPIED GUERNSEY
Mixed among the charming Victorian beach hotels and seaside villages of Guernsey are the remnants of concrete bunkers and military fortifications, including an air-field and observation tower, left over from World War II when German forces occupied the island. A strategic prize in the English Channel, in easy reach of Normandy, Guernsey was the only part of Britain invaded during the war and it remained occupied until the war ended.
