50th Anniversary Celebration
Two centuries on show
Are you planning on visiting Edinburgh? If you are, come and visit the Heriot-Watt University Museum and Archive at the Edinburgh campus where you can explore the history of the Edinburgh campus from the turbulent times of Robert the Bruce to the present day.
The museum tells the story of Heriot-Watt‘s development from its origins in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first Mechanics’ Institute designed to give ordinary people access to specialist education in science and technology, through to today’s cutting-edge, global higher education institution.
To celebrate the 50 years since Heriot-Watt received its Royal Charter, the Golden Years exhibition looks back on what it was like to work and study at the newly appointed university, when the cost of a night out down the student union was counted in shillings and pence and the Beatles were on the jukebox. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to see the original Royal Charter, setting out the new university’s powers,
while the museum’s new touch screens put history at your fingertips, showing video footage of life at Heriot-Watt dating back to the 1930s.
The Museum and Archive can be found on the ground floor of the Cameron Smail Library at the Edinburgh campus. It’s usually open from 10am- 4pm, Monday-Thursday, except on days when the building is closed. The Golden Years exhibition runs until 21 December, 2016 and admission is free.
