50th Anniversary Celebration

whilst completing their degree, and awards grants to student-led projects and innovative ideas that have a direct impact on the student experience. You can see the impact the Annual Fund has had on the lives of Heriot-Watt students in our #GivingTuesday Thank You video on our website.

Heriot-Watt University’s first female professor, Anna McGillivray Macleod – 2000s A pioneer of research in brewing and distilling, Anna Macleod dedicated more than 30 years of service to Heriot-Watt, becoming the University’s first female professor in 1975. Leading her field as President of the Institute of Brewing, in 1976 she was awarded the Horace Brown medal for outstanding achievement by the brewing industry. Anna bequeathed a financial gift in her will which enabled the University’s International Centre for Brewing and Distilling to establish the Anna Macleod Scholarship in 2004.

Today... The brand-new Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Science and Technology, opened in October 2016, plays host to a collaboration between Heriot-Watt and the British Geological Society – its remit to research critical challenges facing mankind today, meeting the energy demands of a rising global population whilst safeguarding the health of the Earth’s surface, sub-surface, oceans and atmosphere.

In addition to core funding from the Natural Environment Research Council and the Scottish Funding Council, the Wolfson Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Binks Trust all provided funding for the core build, helping create additional research opportunities including a Climate Change Research Aquarium integral to the centre’s marine research themes.

There are students on campus today – just as there have been for the last 50 years – because of bursaries supported by graduates from across the world. They are chasing their dreams and completing innovative projects thanks to the generosity that enables scholarships and grants. Our research is leading ideas and solutions globally as a direct result of donations. Philanthropy laid the foundations for our University, and allows it to thrive today.
