1969 1975


Midlothian Council gives the Riccarton estate to the University to form its Edinburgh campus.


Heriot-Watt College becomes a University by Royal Charter.


1966 1966


Heriot-Watt University launches the first Scottish degree courses in Computer Science and Building.


1970


Heriot-Watt introduces Scotland’s first BA (Hons) in Languages for Interpreting and Translating.


Heriot-Watt University opens Scotland’s first Petroleum Engineering Department.


1972


The University launches the first Actuarial Science degree in Scotland.


Nasa launches the Nimbus-5 satellite using remote atmospheric sensing technology developed by physicists at Heriot-Watt – which recorded the first evidence of depletion of the ozone layer.

The Research Park opens at the Riccarton campus – the first of its kind in Europe.
