OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES The smug couple

Is there anything worse than being confronted by the smug couple in the crew mess when you have just got home from another failed tinder date? The knowing glances, the finishing each other’s sentences, the fact they seem to be morphing into just one person? “You’ll find the right person.” Smug smiles. Hmm. Does this mean

I’ll lose my ability to function and think as an individual? Fetch me a bucket please and let’s stick to meaningless one night stands and hook ups in the meantime.

STCW RENEWALS Still a hot topic as the MCA approves one thing, a sea school tells you another, and then a yacht crewing manager says something else. How many jobs are going awry at the moment? Quite a few judging by social media and the general confusion.

VEGANISM So many people have decided that being vegan and/or raw is cool. But if they are yacht crew the chefs are finding it harder to accommodate them in their daily cooking. Their job was already challenging enough and some yachts are specifying no vegans/veggies on board!

BARCELONA Having just completed the sale

on its 160m berth, OneOcean Port Vell are continuing their expansion, putting Barcelona firmly on the superyachting map.

AMERICA’S CUP BERMUDA Still time to convince the boss he should get up close and personal with some of the action in June. The multi-million dollar event has certainly come along way since 1851 around the Isle of Wight.

ME LEICA

The first instant camera by Leica. The perfect combination of style and functionality in the small and compact

Leica Sofort makes it the ideal companion for fashion-conscious people who love photography. It comes in a choice of cool and contemporary colours – orange, mint and white. The simple operation and variety of manual settings of the Sofort will help you take control.

The Ayia Napa Sea Monster is a cryptid, claimed to inhabit the coast of Ayia Napa in Cyprus. Most sightings occur around Cape Greco (Cavo Greko). It is known by the local fishermen as ‘To Filiko Teras’, which translates as ‘The Friendly Monster’. There have been countless sightings of the creature from the depths, with some local newspapers calling the mystery the ‘Cyprus Loch Ness’. It has been speculated to be something like a crocodile or serpent.

If I had my will I would live in a ship on the sea, and never come nearer to humanity than that!

SOCIAL SECURITY CHARGES FOR CREW IN FRANCE On March 11th The French government decreed that social security registration is mandatory for crew working on non-French flagged vessels residing in France.

DOCKWALKING Apparently with the rise of recruitment portals and online interviewing, dockwalking is not as popular. For goodness sake, this is a people business, how the hell do you expect a Captain or senior crew member to interview someone through a screen?

MARMITE YACHT DESIGNS Crazy designs are becoming more common place, what with the new SY ‘A’ from Mr. Starck, and George Lucian’s Airship Carrier Concept ‘Dare to Dream’. I guess all driven by people with too much money and a questionable rationale in taste. What next?

REPORTING INCIDENTS It seems there is

still a culture of keeping any onboard incidents under wraps. Surely, the whole industry can gain from experience and hopefully benefit with a decrease in accidents on board.
