As you can imagine with yacht chillers using sea-water intake, the risk of internal contamination and fouling is ever present, particularly in regions of high sea-water, pollution and debris.
One of Dometic’s innovations is their smooth tube Titan Chiller which uses condenser coils made of industrial-grade titanium, to reduce the potential for erosion and corrosion of the tubes. It’s not just floating water debris or sea-water fouling that causes problems with chiller plumbing during its life. Dometic also claim the chemical cleaning agents used by some owners and crew, or even specialist maintenance contractors, can eventually erode the wall of ‘traditional’ cupronickel tubes causing the system to fail.
Lurking in water filled loops and air ducts throughout the length of a yacht, and in greasy vents and extractor fans in busy kitchens and galleys, amorous bacteria, fungi and viruses can spread harmful disease if left unhindered.
Thankfully, using a variety of specialist equipment that looks, at least to me, not too dissimilar to the Proton Pack energy weapons used by Dan Ackroyd and colleagues in Ghostbusters! There are professional marine
cleaning specialists using a
combination of high pressure vacuum or rotary tube cleaning equipment who can rid yacht HVAC ductwork of nasty airborne and waterborne micro organisms, existing with the potential to positively ruin a person’s annual summer cruise! Whereupon on land, using CEN15780 as the approved European Standard for duct cleaning and air hygiene
throughout Europe, a Facilities Manager in charge of a large office building, for example, can ‘insist’ upon having his office ductwork cleaned to one of 3 levels of cleanliness.
In yachting, no such formal requirements for duct cleanliness currently exist, but companies who are members of the Heating & Ventilating Contractors Assoc tend to use the TR19 ‘Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems’ good practice booklet as their own standard.
Heinen & Hopman, who we’ve talked about before, have a high pressure vacuum and a compact and lightweight rotary brush for ductwork cleaning, but one specialist who have turned the whole process of yacht duct cleaning in to a well managed science is VSS Marine.
Chief Operating Officer, Nick Umfreville, told us: “We pride ourselves in not just ‘air- whipping’ the ductwork with compressed air techniques, a somewhat ‘hit and miss’ technique, particularly on larger rectangular ductwork, but we properly rotary brush the internal surface and collect it in HEPA filtered 4000 cubic feet/minute certificated air movers. Then we carefully hand clean and wash and dry and blow through all components of the air handling units and extract fans before applying our proprietary German bespoke air biocide, to disinfect and sanitize all the internal surfaces of the ductwork systems.”
VSS Marine tell us they have also committed some €70,000 towards new Aeroseal spraying equipment, which gets inside

ducts, vents and extract systems with a spray seal that improve air-tightness. Apart from good health aspects, the financial saving from improved A/C air-delivery with greater efficiency can result in 15 to 30% energy saving costs.
