irstly, corrosion protection and the cosmetic finish are for a large part dependent on the application properties of the chosen products. The wet paint in the can is only half of the final outcome, the other half being the application.


It is therefore vital to set a project up along the following lines: • Carry out a full pre-refit paint status survey • Prepare a bid book to reflect all necessary requirements • Have the yard / contractor prepare a paint manual • List responsibilities and communication lines • Have clear and open corporation between all parties


PRE-REFIT PAINT STATUS SURVEY


This document provides the facts, and includes a full report of the overall paint condition including a summary of any paint defects present, their quantities, density and locations.


BID BOOK


The bid book describes the full scope of work and specific requirements to remedy the types of defects that are present. A good bid book leaves no surprises, provides all necessary information to prepare quotations and enables the owner’s team to compare quotations from different parties. Some typical items addressed in a bid book are: • Scope of work and specifications for different areas of the vessel during the project


• General requirements that need to be fulfilled like tenting, scaffolding, protection


• Dates / planning requirements • Responsibilities of each party involved • Work methods / paint product requirements / certificate requirements / colour schemes


• QA/QC, inspection and reporting responsibilities • Reference areas or reference panel requirements • Technical and cosmetic acceptance criteria and parameters


PAINT MANUAL


The yard and paint contractor have the obligation to prove how all requirements will be fulfilled, processes controlled and agreed targets achieved. The paint manual includes a detailed description of the surface preparations, products, number of coats, application, specific conditions and parameters to be met.


SET UP INSPECTION, COMMUNICATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES It is vital that the paint contractor and yard have a quality management system in place and the responsibilities of each different inspection party are clearly described. In general this shall reflect the following set up: • The contractor will inspect, report and verify 100% of all work carried out


• The yard will verify all main steps of the process, document inspection findings and distribute these as described in the agreed inspection plan


• The paint manufacturer technical representative will carry out regular spot inspections, report and distribute


• The owner’s team paint consultant / inspector will carry out regular spot inspections and final cosmetic result inspections to verify the quality of the work


Finally, it is vital that there is professional corporation between the ship yard, paint applicator, manufacturer and the owner’s team. With one common goal of making sure agreed parameters, methods and quality goals are realistic and acceptable in the given situation for all parties involved.


When refit documentation and QA/QC procedures are set up, prepared and carried out in accordance with above descriptions, safety and security for all parties involved is provided.
