Marching to a very different beat

Te Tattoo is set for a global future - but taking the festival institution away from Edinburgh Castle is challenging

BY WILLIAM PEAKIN A

castle is one thing; a stadium on the other side of the world is quite an- other. “I’ve never booked a stadium before!” David

Allfrey, chief executive and producer of the Edinburgh Tattoo, is look- ing ahead to February when this renowned spectacle will perform in Australia and New Zealand. Te Tattoo has been before, twice to Sydney and once to Wellington

(the only overseas visits in its 65 year history), but this will be the first on Allfrey’s watch. “I’ve only done four years here, so this is the first time that I would have wanted for us to go abroad.” In Sydney’s Etihad Stadium, it will be very different to what he is used to in Edinburgh: “It’s big, it’s circular. Tirty seven thousand people [compared with 8,800 per night in the capital].” Te four nights in Melbourne are

sold out and a fifth has been added. A full-sized replica of Edinburgh Castle will be built there, and in Wellington - but each will be slightly different in order to adapt to the individual venue. Te lighting, the sound; both will be different. Allfrey now has even more respect for his predecessors, who took the show there, than when he first took over: “It’s not for the faint-hearted,” he said.

IT HAS BEEN “an interesting jour- ney” working with the promoters
