Follow the Trail

The Innovation Trail offers hirers the opportunity to see 10 particularly exciting new products being displayed at the Show. We summarise each of the Finalists.

Once again, the standard of entries for the Innovation Trail was high, showing that suppliers have maintained their commitment to research and development. The judging panel of independent hirers, chaired by EHN Editor Alan Guthrie, assessed the 33 eligible entries received, for how they addressed key industry issues like Health & Safety and their worthiness for inclusion in hire fleets, as well as their innovative qualities.

Entrants must have been launched since the 2015 Show and be commercially available, rather than prototypes. Ultimately, 10 Finalists were selected - particularly appropriate for the tenth Executive Hire Show. They form a diverse line-up, appealing to various markets and demonstrating the Show’s reach. Each chosen product will be marked by a large floor tile beside the individual stands, so you can’t miss them.

After entering the Main Hall, aim for the right hand side and the Trail starts at Addex Group on Stand B130, which has launched the Big Ben braked pulley. This is an alternative to the traditional gin wheel and can lift loads of up to 50kg. If the operator lets go of the rope, the load is arrested and can be slowly lowered to the ground automatically. Any lift or descent can be stopped quickly. Close by is Heimdall (UK) on Stand B110. An electronic system on its lighting towers monitors the stability of the unit. If wind speeds become excessive or ground conditions deteriorate, the mast automatically retracts and an alert is sent to the operator. Also, the four hydraulic legs are deployed by operating one lever.

Further along, on Stand B60, is Hilti (Gt. Britain) whose X-Change Module allows users to quickly re-tip diamond core bits on-site. The cores have a ring on the barrel which can be removed with a screwdriver before a new one is pushed and twisted into place. Operators can take one barrel with different rings for various base materials.

Moving closer to the centre of the hall, Morris Site Machinery (Stand B50) has introduced the Makinex PHT-140 powered hand truck, which enables one person to lift and load small equipment weighing up to 150kg. It has a powered lift mechanism via a 12V

25A linear actuator, and a hook attachment gives a 1.9m lift height. The product folds for storage.

Continuing to the left side of the hall will take you to CBD Powerwashers on Stand B4. Using less than 1kW via a generator or an extension lead, its Hotbox 15 and 25 can heat water to 130°C and is designed to be connected to any petrol, diesel or electric cold water pressure washer, increasing hire versatility. Close by is Postpullers (UK) on Stand D8, whose Barrier Master can be fitted to excavators and telescopic handlers for the efficient removal of safety barriers, without manual handling. It exerts a pulling force of 15 tonnes, transferring the extractive power downwards, so that the post will not be ejected from the machine if it should break unexpectedly.

Nearby, at the back of the hall, is Karcher UK on Stand E20. Its HDS trailer-mounted hot water cleaner has integral water and fuel tanks for autonomous site operation. Heat exchangers take waste heat from the engine to pre-heat the water, giving claimed fuel savings of 14%. Further along, on Stand E45, is Dustcontrol UK with the DC Box, designed like a fume cupboard for collecting potentially harmful dust when equipment is being cleaned. The unit has an integral air gun and vacuum suction hose, and items are placed inside via a door and sliding tray. Air is filtered before being released.

Going out into the Atrium, the Trail will take you to Ridge Tool (Ridgid) on Stand X24. Its portable B-500 pipe beveller is designed to bevel a 30cm-diameter stainless steel pipe in one pass in under two minutes, without flames or sparks. Large chips are created, rather than dust, for easy clean-up, and LED lights display optimal operation. Also in the Atrium is Rothenberger on Stand X2, showing Pipecut Turbo saws that are designed to cut 20-450mm diameter pipes of virtually any material. A guard encloses the blade until cutting starts, and a laser alignment system facilitates square cuts.

The judges will ‘mystery shop’ each Finalist while they visit the exhibition, to find out more before making their decision, which will be announced during the Show. So make sure you follow in their footsteps and take the Trail.
