Holstein bulls trade to 2850gns at Kilrea Trade for Holstein bulls at Kilrea was up to 2850gns in May for a Pine Tree Altaoak son from the high ranking PLI Froukje family. The fifteen-month-old Prehen Franko, bred by Stuart Smith and father Robbie, Londonderry, boasts a PLI of +£363 and sold to Norman Bell, Cookstown. His dam is the O-Bee Manfred Justice daughter Prehen Oman Froukje 2 VG86 – the number 17 PLI +£416 cow in the UK. She averaged 12,418kgs at 3.47% butterfat and 3.15% protein in three 305 day lactations. Next best at 2000gns was the day’s supreme champion Mullaugher Chief bred by Norman and David McNaugher, Aghadowey. Born in December 2013 he is by Penrikka Inka Chief Red and is backed by seven generations of VG and EX dams. His dam Penrikka Shottle Cinderella VG87 produced more than 11,140kgs at 4.72% butterfat and 3.40% protein in her second 305 day lactation. Buying him was Boyd Douglas, Dungiven.


The McNaugher duo experienced a steady trade at Kilrea, selling four bulls to average £1922 per head. They also secured 1880gns for the honourable mention award winner Mullaugher Scotty. Sired by Picston Shottle, this seventeen-month-old bull is out of Ebyholme Gibson Melissa EX92-4E LP70. His granddam Hillcroft Leader Melaine EX96-3E LP80 was the grand champion at Madison and All Canadian 4yr-old in 2004. Highest bidder was Wallace Bradley from Garvagh.


Auctioneer Mark Stewart confirmed an 87% clearance


Leading trade at Craven Dairy Auction on 11th May was a fresh heifer from Sam and Louise Wood, Holcombe, selling at £1820. Sired by a stock bull by Goldwyn this three week calved heifer sold giving 28 litres a day. She was bought by Alf and Andrew Townsend, Southfield, Burnley. Next best at £1700 was another from the Wood family, this time the third prized heifer. Three weeks fresh and giving 29 litres a day she sold to Mark Goodall, Tong, Bradford. Meanwhile, making £1650 was Calton Mario Marqui from the Calvert family, this Zacabeo daughter is out of a dam backed by 13 generations of VG or EX cows. This third calver giving 30 litres stood third in the cow class and sold to the Sharp family, Tewitt Hall. Average: pedigree heifers in milk £1460, cows in milk £1440. (CCM Auctions)


Large entry for May Beeston Mid Month A catalogued entry of 530 head of dairy cattle including 330 fresh milkers attracted buyers to Beeston for the May Mid Month Sale. Only eight heifers broke the £2000 barrier with four of these coming from Jack and Barclay Taylor. The top price at £2300 was a homebred heifer Burnbrae Bluesky Klara, a 34kg heifer selling to J G and C A Bayley, Bilstone. The same buyer purchased a Cottonabbots Matrix daughter and a heifer by Burlane Roller Coaster at £2220. While Messrs Colclough of Hassall, paid £2150 for a Bluesky daughter. Selling at £2100 was Rowarton Zebra Weipkje by Lynncrest Zebra from G J Sutton, Astbury, Congleton. She sold to Steve Armstrong for his locally based Armsdale Herd at Bunbury, Tarporley. At £2050 Harry Jolly of Great Eccleston, Preston, sold Fieldside Naomi 44th by Bosside Altaross to Richard Williams, Wrinehill, Crewe, and at level money Simon Powell sold a Shottle daughter to Messrs Elkin of Stone.


In-calf heifers were a good trade making a top of £1380 for a daughter of Ralma Gold Crown from Grosvenor Farms. Lying off heifers from Philip Seveonoaks sold to £1250. Top price for maiden heifers was £900 for a strong bulling heifer from Steve and Sue Beck, Bradwall. Yearlings were up to £800 for a Styche Spirit son from the Sevenoaks herd. And heifer calves made a top of £1000 for Sevenoaks Spencer Lavender, a January born heifer backed by six generations of VG or EX dams. Averages: 82 milking cows £1224.70, 219 milking heifers £1376.22, 51 in-calf and served heifers £1101.95, 93 maiden heifers £681.38 and 31 heifer calves £340.71. (Wright Marshall)
