LIVESTOCK EVENT 2015

Similar to shows across the country numbers were lacking at the Livestock Event, however, the quality was not compromised in the entries forward

E

merging top of the Holstein show at the Livestock Event was Blythbridge Goldwyn Rosalee from Peebleshire- based breeders Alister, Kathleen, Colin and Ann Laird. Judge David Booth from the Shawdale herd tapped this third calver to take the championship title having come through as winner of a strong junior cow class with eight cows forward. She then went on to stand honourable mention in the interbreed championship under Amercian judge Jake Hushon, Wisconsin. This EX93 scored third calver is the seventh generation EX with her dam being the EX92 Wiesenfeld Talent Rosalee. She was first placed second calver at UK Dairy Expo 2013, fourth in the second calver class at the Royal Highland Show 2013 and second and honourable mention at the Royal Highland Show 2015. She has produced 47,000kg in three lactations at 4.19%bf and 3.42%p. Having calved in September, she is due again in September to Blondin Integral.

“Both my champion and reserve had quality,” commented David. “But my top cow had that maturity and scale over the younger reserve champion.”

Standing reserve champion was Dovetrent Royce Blossom Red 43, the first prize heifer in milk led by Ed Stubbs for Messrs Holdcroft and Sons. She also stood top of a class of eight heifers. In the heifer interbreed she also stood honourable mention in front of Ohio-based judge Chris Lang and she carried on her form when standing top in the best Red and White Holstein class. Sired by Sterndale Rose Royce Red she is out of the VG87 scored Dovetrent Bolivia Blossom. This March calved heifer was shown giving 38kg a day and stood junior champion and reserve Holstein champion at Stafford and Lincoln Shows.

Honourable mention went to the second prize junior cow, Peachy

Ava Tyrol from Peachy Holsteins. This second calved Farnear TBR Altaavalon daughter is classified VG88 and calved in April. She is giving 45kg a day and is out of Peachy Allen Tyrol EX91. Also coming to the event off the back of a good run she was interbreed champion at Bath and West Show earlier this year, having been reserve interbreed heifer at the Livestock Event 2014.
