CLUBS ONLINE NORTHERN IRELAND

The Northern Ireland Club members had their judging skills put to the test at the stock judging competition hosted by the Throne family of the Willofarm herd. Master judge for the night was David Boyd from the noted Glaslough herd who was impressed by the high caliber of cows presented for judging, as well as the large number of members, particularly from the HYB Club. The event, generously sponsored by forage inoculant giant Ecosyl, is organised annually to give HYB members an opportunity to qualify to represent Northern Ireland at the parent society’s National Competitions Day. HYB co-ordinator Andrew Kennedy extended his thanks to the Damm, Hilltara and Beechview herds, who hosted stock judging practices ahead of the final. Each competitor’s highest score from the practice session is added together with the highest placed individuals in each category going forward to the National finals. Coaches Ashley Fleming and Mark Logan were also thanked for their dedication and assistance during the practice nights. A record number of herds participated in this year’s herd competition with numbers almost reaching 70 herds.

For the second year in succession the McCann family’s 180-cow Simlahill herd has been crowned winner of Holstein NI’s Ulster Bank-sponsored Herds Inspection Competition. The Simlahill herd also picked up the prize for the best senior cow in the hotly contested premier section, Simlahill Outside Dallas won the best overall senior cow award for the third successive year. Brian Weatherup senior from the Lesmay and Parkend herds in Fife had the task of judging the premier section and commented: “It has been a tremendous competition. I have thoroughly enjoyed judging and have been treated to excellent hospitality. I never thought the number of entries and quality of cattle would be as strong. The placings were close and there was very little between the highest placed competitors in each class.”

The junior section was judged by William Crawford, from the Ardmore herd, County Fermanagh, while Robert Wallace from Templepatrick judged the senior section. Both judged were impressed by the standard and congratulated all competitors. 108 THE JOURNAL AUGUST 2015

STAFFORDSHIRE

Once again the Club took the complimentary stand in Bingley Hall at Staffordshire County Show. A welcome cup of tea or coffee, sandwiches and wonderful cakes were offered with a seat free of charge to members and guests. The stand was run over the two days by members and a raffle was held with the proceeds covering the cost of electricity and food. Two successful stock judging evenings were held, with the first taking place at Rob and Nicola Birchall’s Hazelcroft herd. Steven Miller from the Shanael herd was master judge for the evening with Phillip Oliver taking the role as linear judge. Philip had quite a task with 20 HYB members keen to learn and he started off with a demonstration before letting the members have a go themselves. Two well presented classes of cows and heifers were judged, a great credit to the Birchall family who were first time hosts for a stock judging.

Steve and Pat Hill hosted the second evening at their Hydaways herd where Andy Cope was master judge. Two superb classes were out to judge for an excellent turnout of members and visiting members from other Clubs. The Club would like to thank the Birchall and Hill families for excellent classes of cows, lovely refreshments and really good evenings. Results
