LANCASHIRE

May was a busy month for Lancashire members with three stock judging events which were kindly hosted by Messrs Parkinson, Liscabank, Messrs Hartley, Roughwood and Messrs Riley, Halloverhill. All three presented great classes for members and master judge Alan Robson to judge, so the Club is very grateful to the hosts for all their work. Results:

14 years and under: Rosie Dennison 15-19 years: Tom Gorst 20-26 years: Jennie Booth 27-29 years: Mark Cornthwaite Gentlemen: David Booth Ladies: Helen Herd

Open reason giving: Henry Sanderson Congratulations to our young members who did exceptionally well at the Competitions Day. Jennie Booth was fi rst in the senior stock judging and also gave the best set of reasons overall. Tom Gorst was second in the intermediate section and Rosie Dennison was fourth. Our reserves also did well with Olivia Gorst coming fi rst in the juniors and Jonathan Woodhouse second in the intermediates. In the linear judging Rosie and Eve Dennison were fi rst and fourth in the juniors and Jonathan Woodhouse was third in the intermediate section. At the end of April members visited some top herds including Moorshard, Lakemead, Sahara/Wiltor and Richaven on a three-day tour. The cows viewed in all herds created a tremendous impression and our sincere thanks go to all our hosts.

In June a coach load travelled to Leicestershire to Messrs Hill’s

Tiptoe herd and Messrs Birkle’s Whinchat herd. Two very different enterprises with 600 cows at Tiptoe being milked three times a day through a newly installed 44-point rotary parlour with new

WESTERN

More than 140 members of the Western Holstein Club gathered at the newly restructured Grosvenor Farms on the 29th

April for a farm walk. Everyone enjoyed talks

from the team on a wide variety of subjects including livestock management, housing and feeds, a tour round the premises and a look at the new rotary parlour from the outside and inside. The Club’s thanks go to the team at Grosvenor and also Cogent for sponsoring excellent hospitality.

Throughout June members were treated to three superb stock judging events by kind permission of Will and Louise Glenn, Distinctive, Joseph Heler Farms, Helton and Judy, Ivan and Richard Shepherd, Budworth. Judges were Steven Miller, David Dunlop and Graham Kirby, respectively, who generously gave their time as well as tips and pointers for the ever-growing number of younger members keen to learn what to look for in the best of the Holstein breed. None of the evenings were the same, each host put their individual stamp on their event and the winners differed at each event. Congratulations to the overall stock judging winners from the series of events. Junior: Jodie Nutsford Intermediate: Charlotte Fowler Senior: Paul Gerrard Ladies: Rachael Goodwin Gentlemen: David Bourne Cheshire Show was next on the calendar and the Western Club enjoyed serving refreshments and meals to members and friends of the Club, as well as providing hospitality to the wide variety of exhibitors and judges. The Club would like to congratulation our HYB members who attended the National Competitions Day in Derbyshire at which Jodie Nutsford achieved third in linear assessment and Larissa Jones was fi fth in stock judging. Congratulations also to Larissa on being this year’s Cheshire Dairy Queen.

The Summer Herd Competition is our next event and the number of new exhibitors interested in taking part is encouraging. On 5th

November the Club’s Wexham Cup Bull Show and Sale will feature a new prize for the best genomic bull as well as the existing traditional classes, this underlines the growing trend towards genomic testing.

collecting area, sand bedded cubicles and slurry stores. Edward, John and Andrew were very interesting in their discussions and the members had a great morning.

The afternoon was spent admiring the powerful framed, high type cows at Whinchat with Whinchat Shottle Savoire Fare EX95-3E being the favourite. She completes 10 generations of EX cows averaging 94 points and tracing back to the EX97 Jan-com Fond Matt Matilda. The afternoon was fi nished off in style with a cream tea on the lawn kindly provided by Mimi Birkle.
