FRIESIANS SUIT STRANRAER GRASS-BASED SYSTEM WHERE LONG LIVED COWS GIVE GREAT YIELDS

B

y crossing leading Freisian sires on to their Holstein cows Norman Turtle and his son Iain have bred a

herd of medium sized cows capable of grazing for a large portion of the year and delivering good yields. The Turtle family’s Frenchpark herd, based at Kirkholm, Stranraer, totals 260 cows which calve all year round and graze from mid-April until November. The herd average is 8305kg at 4.19%bf and 3.36%p, with a calving interval of 378 days and low cell counts. Milk is sold to the Caledonian Cheese Company to produce Seriously Strong Cheddar and Iain is keen to use bulls with high protein percent. Most of the older cows have some Holstein blood, but in the past 10 years only Friesian bulls have been used, explains Iain who is also a vet. “I’m looking for a medium sized cow that is easy to manage and quick to get in calf – Friesians suit our farm well. We have found the replacement rate is a lot lower with Friesians as the cows are lasting much longer.” Iain says a number of bulls are having a positive infl uence on the herd. “I’m particularly pleased with the group of Deangate Quentin daughters that are milking in their fi rst and second lactations and also pleased with the Langley Evolution daughters. The Wendy family is doing well and Frenchpark Wendy 130, by Catlane Chad, is a particularly impressive young cow. “We’re really starting to reap the rewards of using Friesian sires, it just goes to show what can be achieved by crossing top Friesian sires on Holstein cows.”
