Sales News Carletonherd Dispersal


The dispersal of the entire milking portion of the Carletonherd herd of pedigree Holsteins took place at Beeston Castle Auction on behalf R R Basey-Fisher and Son of Carleton St Peter, Norwich, in front of a good crowd of buyers. Trade was good for all fresh cattle and for those guaranteed back in-calf for the summer and autumn. Top seller was Carletonherd Constellation Buttergirl, a daughter of the stock bull Forte Constellation that was milking with her fourth calf and due again at the end of October to Majestic Galaxy Algebra. She sold for 1620gns to G Green and Son, Lach Dennis, Northwich. Next at 1600gns was Carletonherd Prowler Bonita, a second calver by Sunshine-Dairy T Prowler, she is due again in November to Relough Danube. She was still giving 33kg daily and was purchased by R G and D J Frith, Allostock, Knutsford. In-calf heifers due from the end of June to October met a great trade selling to 1500gns three times for daughters of Deangate Consul and D-J Die Hard Owen going to M J Stokes and Partners, Nottinghamshire, and a third by Gillette Windbrook going to an undisclosed Scottish buyer. Averages: 109 cows and milking heifers £1080.36, 35 in-calf heifers £1287.30. (Wright Marshall)


Fever Sue Tops Border and Lakeland sale for Espland Border and Lakeland’s Show and Sale on 20th May saw a packed ringside for a strong line up of heifers. Top price at 2150gns was the pre-sale champion Espland Fever Sue from Alan Cannon. This milky heifer sold giving 35kg a day to the Somerville family, Dumfries. David Brewster sold four heifers to average more than £2000 including Boclair Wizard Lady May for 2100gns to Mr Clark, Kirtlebridge. Judge Euan Lawrie tapped out Errolston Knowledge Christine to take reserve spot for Brian, Valerie and Craig Davidson. Classifi ed VG87 she is a granddaughter of the much admired Nethervale Rubens Christine EX95 who sold at the Border and Lakeland Sale in 2006 for 3400gns. Giving 50kg a day she sold for 2000gns to Robert Veitch, Mauchline. Averages: 10 cows in milk £1555.50, 60 heifers in milk £1583.66, fi ve heifer calves £483. (Harrison and Hetherington)


3100gns twice at Sedgemoor Top quality stock generated keen bidding at Sedgemoor with two in-calf heifers making 3100gns. The fi rst was a Shottle daughter from the Caeremlyn herd, Carmarthenshire, while a red Destry daughter from the Marcroft herd dispersal, Somerset, made the same money.


Fresh milk sold to a premium with Shottle again siring the top price, a 32kg heifer at 2250gns from Stuart and Colin Roger’s Longmoor herd. At 2000gns was Rookhaye Million Agnes from Rookhaye Estate. The same vendor sold two heifers with calves at foot to realise in excess of 2000gns for both outfi ts.


Cows were up to 1950gns and 1900gns for Moorshard Secret Show and Moorshard Berryhill Meg, freshly calved cows from Brian and Randolph Miller. The main portion of Eric Puddy’s Marcroft herd was dispersed 18 months ago through Sedgemoor, two calves retained for his neighbour to show at young farmers events included the joint top price of the day at 3100gns for his red in-calf heifer Marcroft Destry Lulu. In calf to a red Holstein and backed by six generations of VG and EX she sold to a volume buyer from Cornwall.


Bulls sold to 1500gns for Moorshard Auto Strada from R K and S G Miller and Sons.


Collective sale averages: fresh calved cows £1838, fresh calved heifers £1659, bull £1418, in-calf heifers £2625, yearling heifers £606, heifer calves £333. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)


Caeremlyn In-Calf Heifers Sell to 3100gns The monthly dairy sale at Sedgemoor Auction on 21st May generated keen bidding from producers and breeders from across the South of England and Wales. A consignment of 87 calved and in-calf heifers from Mary and Tegwyn Davies’ Caeremlyn herd based in Carmarthenshire peaked at 3100gns. Sale leader was Caeremlyn Shottle Mitzie, an in-calf heifer backed by 10 generations of VG and EX. In-calf heifers with strong pedigrees were well sought after with Caeremlyn Alexander Rolls 2 making 2650gns, Caeremlyn Toy Tracy and Caeremlyn Million Tracy making 2300gns and 2200gns respectively. At 2500gns was Caeremlyn Million Rhapsody, a fresh calved heifer with 10 generations of Excellent classifi ed dams. Averages: freshly calved heifers £1633, in-calf heifers £1531. Broadfi eld Dispersal The Broadfi eld Holstein herd was dispersed on farm on 4th June at Bodenham, Herefordshire, for Broadfi eld Court Estate. Trade peaked at 1750gns on two occasions, the fi rst was a February calved heifer giving 40kgs and selling to J Rea and Sons, Ludlow.


Then at the same money was a third lactation cow that produced 10,100kg in her second lactation and sold one month fresh giving 45kgs. She was purchased by Blaencediw Farms, Whitland. In-calf heifers were up to 1220gns for an August calver out of a 10,464kg cow. Buying her were Messrs Rees
