Eastern Sunrise L
How do you breath new life into a watersports venue once used during the Olympics? Simple, just speak to one of the world's leading producers of multimedia spectaculars and, several million euros later, you've got yourself a show that'll bring in audiences flocking from all around
aunched on August 31, less than two months after the premiere of ECA2's Lake of Illusions at Happy Valley Shanghai, Eastern Sunrise was produced by the
French show specialist for Rizhao City Construction Investment (RCCI) and, unlike the former night-time spectacular, it exists as a standalone after dark attraction. Located on China’s northeast coast, in the Shandong
Province, Rizhao is where the sun’s first rays greet each new day; indeed the city's name even means “sunshine”. This of course provided inspiration for ECA2's show designers, but they also integrated a locally-inspired love story. Eastern Sunrise combines awe-inspiring technology and dazzling effects with a story that unfolds to a custom soundtrack. All around, the decor is a constant choreography of excitement, from the focus jets to lasers, geysers, shooting flames, lights and fireworks, with 3D videomapping and other effects projected onto a vast, magical water screen and sail sculptures that echo the local passion for sailing and the sea. Never before has ECA2 employed so many effects within such a concentrated space. Packed in and around the 100 x 50m sea water pool are eight concrete sails and 1,370 square metres of submersible catwalks with supporting effects.

star-crossed lovers who should never have fallen in love. And yet their romance blossoms. It’s a tale of two forces colliding yet completing each other. Yin and yang, sun and earth, land and sea. The audience’s heart is won over. Memories have been created. And hopefully audience members will be share the experience with their family and friends, in turn attracting new visitors and helping to transform the fortunes of this port city. During the 2018 Beijing Olympics, Rizhao served as a back up for water-borne events held in Qingdao. Since then it has welcomed more than 40 national and international aquatic sporting events such as the 2013 Laser Radial Sailing
World Championship and the 11th Chinese National Games in 2009.
Eastern Sunrise is part on ongoing effort designed to
breathe fresh life into this world-class watersports park. The show was produced in just 12 months, from the first phone call to opening night; a new record for the French firm, which has produced multimedia spectaculars across the globe but is working increasingly in Asia. “To create, design, build and install such a monumental
show is a massive and complex feat, involving many thousands of creative, artistic and technical decisions, and countless daily challenges,” says a company spokesperson. “Yet that is what we managed to do, with many thanks due to the flexibility, reactivity and professionalism of RCCI. Eastern Sunrise is a thrill for all the senses.” Many of the 110-strong team were the same ECA2 staff
that had helped get Lake of Illusions up and running in Shanghai the previous month; clearly they must have quite a few Chinese stamps on their passport by now. Designed and produced by ECA2 chairman/CEO Jean- Christophe Canizares, Eastern Sunrise plays each night (twice on Fridays/Saturdays) inside a 2,030 capacity purpose-built arena. Tickets costs to each 30-minute performance cost from RMB 160 to 280 ($24/€22 to $41/€38)
